Yuroke youth to take a stand against violence

The Yuroke Youth Advisory Council, formed and chaired by local Member for Yuroke Ros Spence MP, will this year focus on issues of violence in Melbourne’s outer north, including family violence.

The Council will run an awareness campaign to coincide with White Ribbon Day and the annual Victoria Against Violence campaign later this year, encouraging young people to take a stand and learn more about the impact of violence in our community.

Violence, including family violence, is a major concern in Melbourne’s outer north, with 3599 family incident related offences recorded in 2015.

In Parliament last week, Ms Spence requested that the Minister for the Prevention for Family Violence, the Hon. Fiona Richardson MP, meet with the Youth Advisory Council to discuss this important issue.

In addition to appointing Australia’s first Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence, the Andrews Labor Government has delivered the groundbreaking Royal Commission into Family Violence, funded over 400 new police officers and are rolling out custody officers across the state to free up local resources.

The Yuroke Youth Advisory Council consists of representatives nominated by secondary schools across the Yuroke electorate, providing young local leaders with the opportunity to give feedback on issues of importance to their peers.

The Council was initially formed in 2015 and met with a range of stakeholders and community leaders before delivering a report focusing on local issues to the Minister for Youth, the Hon. Jenny Mikakos MP, at the end of the year.
