LOCAL CREATIVITY TAKES CENTRE STAGE IN HUME

The Andrews Labor Government is giving local talent in the Hume municipality the chance to take centre stage through a two-year program designed to upskill emerging artists and open up career pathways for young people.

Member for Yuroke Ros Spence today announced a $156,700 grant through the Labor Government’s Creative Suburbs program.

The funding will support Hume Council to develop Hume Studios – a program that will see emerging artists and young people come together with leading musicians, dancers and spoken-word artists.

Hume Studios – a partnership with acclaimed arts organisation Outer Urban Projects – gives participants the opportunity to engage in creative workshops and develop a largescale performance that will premiere in 2019. Outer Urban Projects has a history of working with young people and their communities in Melbourne’s culturally diverse northern suburbs to break new creative and artistic ground.

Hume Studios will see the Outer Urban Projects team train emerging artists to take on roles as mentors throughout the program.

Young participants will build their creative skills and be given the opportunity to showcase their talents at future events and festivals in Hume.

The Hume Studios program will call for participants in May 2018.

The Creative Suburbs program is an initiative of the Government’s Creative State strategy, supporting outer metropolitan councils to develop creative projects and empower local communities.
