Ms SPENCE (Yuroke) (12:53:53) — (14 268) My constituency question is to the Minister for Education. Craigieburn residents are thrilled with the announcement of $24 million for the new Craigieburn South secondary college. My question is: what is the time line for the delivery of this new school?

With significant population growth in the Yuroke electorate, local families have expressed a strong desire for an additional secondary school to both ensure that our schools can continue to provide a great learning environment and deliver more options for students. This investment shows that the Labor government listens and is delivering on what is important to residents in my community. This approach is in stark contrast to the Liberals, who did not plan for a single new school in the Yuroke electorate in the previous term, despite knowing that growth was only going to continue in the coming years. I know that residents are very keen to hear more about this fantastic local investment and would greatly appreciate any further information that the minister can provide.

I thank the Member for Yuroke for her indefatigable lobbying on behalf of the people of Yuroke, particularly on matters relating to education and new schools.

The latest State Budget brings the Andrews Labor Government’s investment in school infrastructure over the past four years to $3.8 billion, funding 70 new schools, more than 1,300 school upgrades and ten Tech Schools.

As you are aware, the land acquisition stage process usually lasts an average of 12 months. During this time, the Department of Education and Training undertakes detailed site investigations to ensure that the proposed site is suitable for use as a school. This process is conducted in accordance with the Government’s Land Transactions Policy and Guidelines.

I can confirm that $24 million has been allocated to deliver Stage 1 construction of the new proposed Craigieburn South Secondary College 7-12, which is expected to open in January 2020. This school will be built for 1,200 students, assisting in alleviating enrolment pressures for surrounding schools and to meet the demand of a growing population.

This school will also be an inclusion hub, providing inclusive education for students with disabilities in Melbourne’s growing northern suburbs. The school principal, who will focus on recruiting staff and setting the future direction of the school, will be appointed in the year prior to the school’s opening.
