CRAIGIEBURN LOCALS HAVE THEIR SAY ON NEW STATION CAR PARK

Progress is being made on delivering a new commuter car park for Craigieburn Station with community consultation now complete.

More than 200 locals participated in the survey which revealed that more than 50 per cent of passengers are parking in local streets, which is clogging up local roads for residents and making it more difficult to catch the train.

Locals also wanted to see an increase in the number of parking spaces for Craigieburn Station, with more than 80 per cent of survey participants saying this is the most important part of the project.

The Andrews Labor Government is delivering a 745-space car park, which will be built along the eastern edge of the Hume Highway, directly east of Craigieburn station, boosting overall parking in the area to a total of 1,100 spaces.

With this massive boost to car parking, the community has asked for multiple entry/exit points and ‘park and ride’ facilities to be included in the design, to help minimise traffic congestion in the area.

Locals also want to see safe pedestrian access between the new car park and the station, highlighting the need for the design to feature plenty of lighting and CCTV for added security.

The new car park will be linked to the station via a new footpath along Potter Street and a signalised pedestrian crossing will be installed for safe passage to the station.

The upgrade will also deliver more accessible parking at the existing station car park, making it easier to access the station.

Next steps for this important project include planning, design and relevant approvals which will continue over coming months, with the new car park to be completed mid-2020. The concept design for the car park will be available in April this year.

More than 30 new parking spaces are also being delivered on Potter Street, in addition to the 123 spaces delivered since October 2016, to help ease congestion in the short term. Works have already started on the new parking spaces on Potter Street and will be completed mid-2019.
