Adjournment: Yuroke Youth Advisory Council
Ros SPENCE (Yuroke) (19:07:01) — (14 914) My adjournment matter is for the Minister for Industry and Employment, and the action I seek is for the minister to join me in meeting with members of the Yuroke Youth Advisory Council so they can let him know about their work throughout 2018. As the minister knows, the Yuroke Youth Advisory Council members chose to focus on the topic of youth employment this year, meeting with a number of experts and facilitating a forum to help young people get the knowledge they need to get a job or pursue higher education. I am sure the members of the youth advisory council would greatly appreciate meeting with the minister to share with him the great work they have done over this year.

I thank the member for Yuroke for inviting me to meet with the Yuroke Youth Advisory Council to discuss their work on youth employment. The Victorian Government is taking action on multiple fronts to help young unemployed people to find and sustain employment and I would like to commend the council for choosing to focus on youth employment this year. The government has allocated over $90 million for Jobs Victoria, reflecting the commitment that all Victorians should have the opportunity to share in the social and economic benefits that come from employment. The main employment program delivered under Jobs Victoria is the Jobs Victoria Employment Network (JVEN). Through JVEN, the government funds 51 partners to engage employers to identify job opportunities and to prepare jobseekers who face barriers to employment to fill those roles. JVEN offers its partners the flexibility to tailor services to the needs of employers and jobseekers in their local area. There are currently 29 multi-target Jobs Victoria partners providing services to young jobseekers including five that provide specialised services. I am pleased to advise that to date (as at September 2018) 3,870 jobseekers aged 15-24 have registered with the program 1,510 of them have been supported into work. Complementing this network of Jobs Victoria partners, we also have a number of bespoke programs with specialist services for young people. The government is further increasing employment opportunities through the Major Projects Skills Guarantee, by ensuring that at least 10 per cent of the work on major infrastructure projects is undertaken by apprentices, trainees and engineering cadets.
